Next steps after your house is sold
- Give your forwarding address to the post office 2 weeks before of the move.
- Arrange to have utilities disconnected a few days after the scheduled closing date.
- Send change of address notifications to financials institutions: banks, credit card companies, etc.
- Send change of address notifications to other services: magazine subscriptions, etc.
- Cancel the newspaper, gardener and security service.
- Notify friends, relatives, and business colleagues of the move.
- Check insurance coverage for moved items. Usually movers only cover what they pack.
- Clean out appliances and prepare them for moving, if applicable.
- Long distance moves are usually billed according to weight.
Note the weight of goods you are moving.
Some heavy items like used appliances may be less expensive to replace than move.
- Have a "first open" box with things you'll need most:
toilet paper, soap, trash bags, scissors, hammer, screwdriver,
pens, paper, cups & plates, water and snacks.
Plus, if you're moving out of town
- Get copies of medical and dental records and prescriptions for your family and pets.
- Get copies of children's school records for transfer.
- Ask friends for introductions to anyone they know in your new neighborhood.
- Consider special car needs for pets when traveling.
- Let a friend or relative know your route.
- Carry traveler's checks or an ATM card for ready cash until you can open a bank account.
- Safely pack items from your safe deposit box.
- Put plants in boxes with holes for air circulation if you're moving in cold weather.
Items to have on hand for the new owners
- Owner's manual or items left in the house.
- Warranties for any items left in the house.
- Extra sets of house keys.
- Garage door openers.
- Remote controls for ceiling fans, lights, curtains, etc.
- Code to burglar alarm or reset to all zeros.
- A list of service providers: house cleaner, gardener,
pool service, electrician, plumber, handyman, etc.
